The New York Knicks spent the summer celebrating the franchise’s first championship in 53 years, and before getting back to the grind, its stars have been enjoying the ongoing FIFA World Cup, which has taken the U.S. by storm. The very best in the world are in America, battling for soccer’s ultimate prize, and few have drawn more attention than Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team. Finals MVP Jalen Brunson took time out to watch Argentina’s Round of 32 match, and his reaction showed just how legendary the occasion was.

Cape Verde, a small island nation west of Africa, with a population of just around 500k, took three-time world champs Argentina to the very limit on Friday. They lost 3-2 after a spirited extra-time battle, which had many neutrals cheering for the underdogs.

It was one of the best matches in the tournament, and Brunson took to X to tweet, "That match was unbelievable."

Argentina struck first, courtesy of a Lionel Messi goal in the 29th minute. Defense prevailed for the rest of the first half, as neither team found the back of the net again.

The next goal came from Deroy Duarte, who scored the equalizer in the 59th minute.

The score remained tied until extra time, when Argentina’s Lisandro Martinez restored the lead. However, with plenty of time still left, Cabo Verde’s Sindy Lopez Cabral responded once again to level the score.

Ultimately, the game ended in heartbreak for Cabo Verde after a Messi corner kick led to an own goal by Diney Borges. But everyone in Miami that evening, and around the world, including Argentina’s players, could only applaud Cape Verde for its efforts.

Now, the focus for Argentina shifts to Egypt, whom they will play in the Round of 16. The African side defeated Australia on penalties in their RO32 clash on Friday.

Given how tightly contested the game was and how it ended, Jalen Brunson’s reaction was brief but understandable, echoing the sentiments of many who witnessed it.

Brunson and other NBA stars (like Jimmy Butler, who has been traveling around the country watching several games) can enjoy one of the greatest sporting spectacles tension-free, for now. But soon, they'll have to return to the grind in their own elite league. For Brunson, who is coming off the back of a championship win, big changes await.

The Knicks Offseason Is Off to a Polarizing Start

After winning their first title in 53 years, the New York Knicks should be going all in on maintaining the squad that accomplished the feat. However, that has not entirely gone according to plan.

The starting five of Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Karl-Anthony Towns is still intact, which is a good sign. Most of their backups who played significant roles in the Finals are also coming back. However, Mitchell Robinson stands out as an outlier.

The 7-foot-tall center will be suiting up for Eastern Conference Rivals Boston Celtics next season, after agreeing to a 3-year, $47 million deal.

His signing with a rival comes after team owner James Dolan reportedly refused to take the team to the second apron. Even though the front office has expressed a willingness to do it to remain competitive.

Without Robinson, the Knicks will have to look for a backup center who can play the same role he did. However, this year's free agent class is not quite as strong as other years.

Additionally, the fact that they are looking specifically for a center rules them out as a destination for LeBron James. Even Rich Paul, the 41-year-old's agent, said as much on 'Game Over' when he was discussing the realistic destinations for his client this summer.

Some of their Eastern Conference rivals, on the other hand, have made obvious upgrades.

The Miami Heat acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers traded for Jaylen Brown. Due to how these two teams moved this offseason, they are now possible destinations for James.

For the Knicks, meanwhile, the focus has to be on maintaining the level they showed this postseason, which helped them win a championship.
