Insider Provides Worrying Luka Doncic Update Amid Lakers Messy Ownership Situation

Luka Doncic brought nearly the entire Lakers roster to his native Slovenia for a bonding trip. He worked out with teammates at Stozice Arena while the franchise’s ownership situation continued to spiral back home. That difference, where Doncic is actively building chemistry with a team whose business side looks unstable, is what’s giving a speculated worrying update about his future in LA.
ESPN’s Tim MacMahon sees a ticking clock. He noted that Doncic’s three-year extension is shorter than it looks, leaving an opening for rival teams to monitor.
It’s the same thing with Luka. He’s done nothing but express optimism and excitement about the Lakers since he signed that extension.
“Just like [Nikola Jokic] can profess his loyalty to the Denver Nuggets, there’s still going to be teams that are positioning themselves and monitoring that and all that kind of thing.," MacMahon said. "It’s the same thing with Luka Doncic. He’s done nothing but express optimism and excitement about the Lakers since he signed that extension."
"But it’s not that long-term of an extension, and you better believe there’s teams around the league that are looking at that situation and saying, ‘Hey, if this thing goes sideways, we’d sure like to get Luka in the midway through his prime,’” he added.
Doncic signed a three-year extension with the Lakers for $165 million maximum in last year's offseason. His contract runs through the 2027-28 season with a player option for 2028 before he enters free agency or extends his contract.
“If you’re Luka, betting on the brand is pretty safe, which is why the Lakers sold for even more money than they sold for a year ago,” Brian Windhorst said. “And chances are if they sold again in a year, they’d sell for even more, because you’re betting on the brand.”
Yet brand value may not offset the instability. The Lakers are in their second ownership change in just 14 months, a pace that has historically unsettled star players. Bob Iger and Josh Kushner’s pending $12.5 billion purchase from Mark Walter is complicated by Jeanie Buss’s legal challenge to retain the family’s remaining shares.
Doncic’s Own Actions Tell a Different Story, for Now

None of this suggests Doncic himself is wavering. His Slovenia trip, timed as ownership headlines dominated, signals his focus on building chemistry with teammates like Austin Reaves and Bronny James regardless of boardroom drama.
For Luka, it would certainly be about winning championships. He is regarded as one of the best current NBA stars yet to win a Championship or an MVP. Whereas his peers like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic have already achieved that. If the Lakers do not bring the Championship closer to him, he might look to move to a different team or a different conference altogether for a better chance to win.
Lakers, in the meantime, will be doing everything to keep their star. But whether that commitment holds through another year of uncertainty is harder to predict. Rival teams are already watching. The Lakers will not truly answer the question until Doncic’s next extension window opens in 2027.
