“I Always Gave My Best”: Miami Heat Star Announces Retirement After 10 NBA Seasons

The Miami Heat is about to enter its newest era in the 2026-27 season after Giannis Antetokounmpo was traded to South Beach. Everyone is looking forward to what Antetokounmpo can accomplish next to Bam Adebayo. However, it appears that one Heat player will no longer make his return to the roster to help the newly formed duo.

Former Heat shooting guard Josh Richardson announced on Wednesday that he's officially retiring from the NBA. Richardson went on social media to make the announcement.

"I always gave my best, that’s why I can say this with no regret. I am grateful to have been able to love this game and it love me back as much as it did. It wasn’t set up for me at any point in my career, and from high school, college, and the pros i humbly worked my butt off every day be the best that i could be. All my fans, coaches and teammates, I hope I left a good impression and a positive view of me," Richardson wrote on Instagram.

Richardson spent 10 seasons in the NBA, with six of those years coming in a Heat uniform across two separate stints. His first began after Miami selected him in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft. That chapter came to an end in 2019, when the Heat traded him to the Philadelphia 76ers as part of the deal that brought Jimmy Butler to South Beach.

Richardson returned to Miami in 2023, signing a two-year, $5.9 million contract for his second stint with the franchise. Unfortunately, injuries derailed his comeback. In February 2024, Richardson suffered a severe dislocation of his right shoulder.

After returning the following season, he was limited by chronic heel issues that restricted him to just eight appearances during the 2024-25 campaign. The lingering injuries ultimately forced him off the court for good, leading to his decision to retire from the NBA.

Miami Heat Looking at a Bright Future

While it's sad to see a former Miami Heat player retire at an early age, the team can now look forward to a brighter future. Giannis Antetokounmpo is now part of the Heat and is already locked in for the upcoming season.

In a recent video of Giannis hanging out at the Heat's training facility with head coach Erik Spoelstra and president Pat Riley, he expressed how he's already looking forward to familiarizing himself with his new team's style of play.

As early as now, Antetokounmpo wants to understand how to work with his new teammates before the 2026-27 season commences.

"I’ll be here," Antetokounmpo said. "I'm doing it for me. If I'm not here, I won't know what the f**k is going on. I want to know everything — offense, defense. So when training camp comes, I'm already ahead of them, and I can talk to them. If I don't know the offense, how can I talk to my teammates?"

As of this writing, the Heat are still searching for additional pieces to complement Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. On paper, the roster is still missing a reliable perimeter scorer who can consistently create offense. Because Antetokounmpo and Adebayo thrive in similar areas of the floor, Miami could benefit from adding a proven shot-maker to better balance its attack.

Recent rumors have linked the Heat to two veteran scorers: DeMar DeRozan and Klay Thompson, who are reportedly among the team's top trade targets.
