The Real Reason Why the Hornets Traded LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges
The Charlotte Hornets appear to be shaping up a whole new identity heading into the 2026-27 season. In late June, they surprisingly traded two players who looked like a part of their future: LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges, who ran the show in Charlotte for the last six seasons. And as it turns out, the reasons for the Hornets' parting ways with the duo had little to do with basketball.
According to CBS Sports Director of Basketball Scouting Adam Finkelstein, the Hornets do not want Kon Knueppel, the No. 4 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, exposed to bad influences, with Finkelstein labeling LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges as problematic figures within the organization.
"I think the other thing they've done, they've cleaned up their locker room," Finkelstein said. "They are getting rid of the bad influences, whether that be Miles Bridges and his issues off the floor, whether that be LaMelo Ball and his unwillingness to defend."
"They are surrounding Kon Knueppel, who was the grown-up in the room as an NBA rookie this year, with other like-minded people," Finkelstein continued. "And simultaneously, they're building up their draft capital. They're building up their salary cap space. So it's going to allow them to be players for the foreseeable future in anything that may come available in the NBA trade market."
Bridges was traded to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Grayson Allen, Royce O’Neale, and a 2033 first-round pick. Meanwhile, Ball was dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves alongside Josh Green in a blockbuster trade that sent Naz Reid and several draft picks to the Hornets.
From Charlotte’s perspective, the trade allowed the franchise to move on from the issue, while Minnesota acquired an All-Star guard capable of setting up Anthony Edwards while remaining a scoring threat himself.
Many basketball fans are excited to see the two stars play together, especially given their similarly goofy yet flashy personalities, both on and off the court.
LaVar Ball Believes LaMelo Ball Won't Have Chemistry Issues With Anthony Edwards
It’s no secret that Anthony Edwards has one of the biggest personalities in the NBA, if not the biggest. He’s brash and confident, but he has the game to back it up, averaging 28.8 points per game during the 2025-26 season. That combination has made him one of the league’s most popular stars.
Given his status as the face of the franchise, some have raised questions about how LaMelo Ball will fit into the picture. The two share similarly outgoing personalities. Both love putting on a show on the court and rarely hold back when speaking to the media. While that could make for an entertaining partnership, it also raises questions about how their dynamic will develop, especially since the Timberwolves are still very much Edwards’ team.
However, LaMelo's father, LaVar Ball, reassured everyone that chemistry won't be an issue when the next season starts in October.
"From my growing experience, Melo always meshes with a dark-skinned brother," LaVar hilariously said. "Even growing up in Chino Hills, if I get a darky to stay with us, he loves them. So I have no problem."
While many are anticipating what the duo of Ball and Edwards would look like, some are also looking forward to the potential arrival of LeBron James in Minnesota. Recent reports suggest that the Wolves have "amped up" their pursuit of the King to group with the young duo.
Minnesota is aiming to win a championship next season after making back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances before falling to the Spurs in the conference semifinals. Bringing James into the fold could further strengthen its case as a legitimate title contender.
