One of the most highly anticipated teams heading into the 2026-27 season is the Philadelphia 76ers. This is due to the arrival of both Jaylen Brown and LeBron James. Earlier this summer, the Boston Celtics shockingly traded Brown to the Sixers for Paul George. Then, not too long after, James decided to sign with the 76ers for a two-year veteran minimum deal.
Looking at the 76ers' current roster, they look to be a menacing figure in the Eastern Conference with the combination of Brown, James, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe. Philly is undoubtedly a superteam that has the potential to win the title next season. However, one of LeBron's former Los Angeles Lakers teammates expressed his concern about the new Sixers team.
"There's only one basketball for 48 minutes," former Lakers guard Dennis Schroder, who now plays for the Charlotte Hornets, said in a translated interview uploaded by Basket-Infos on X.
"You have LeBron James, one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Joel Embiid, who was MVP. Tyrese Maxey, who's reached All-Star level. So I'm really curious to see how all this is going to work ... I think it would almost be too much for me to play on a team like that," Schroder concluded.
His concern highlights the challenge of integrating five offensive weapons.
While Schroder does make a good point, everything remains to be seen at this point. Over the years, while many superteams like the 2012-13 Lakers flopped, we've seen other squads like LeBron's "The Heatles" era with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh win a couple of titles in 2012 and 2013.
It all comes down to whether the new 76ers team will be a good mix. Based on their composition, they seem to be well-balanced.
According to previous reports, the Sixers plan to let James play point guard. Brown and Maxey will then serve as the team's two primary scorers, with Edgecombe backing them up. Then, Embiid will be the team's anchor and towering force inside the paint.
LeBron James and New 76ers Teammates Commence First Workout Together
Earlier this August, a video of LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, and Tyrese Maxey went viral because it was the first time everyone had seen the three stars work out together on the hardwood. While we are still a month away from the NBA's training camp, it appears that James, Brown, and Maxey wanted to get some extra work in.
After their intense chemistry-building exercise, Maxey had a few positive things to say about his new teammates.
"First time all three of us worked out, correct. It went well," Maxey said. "Great communication. Great vibes. Great energy. Three guys who work very hard and take our games very seriously. So that was great."
While Maxey is ecstatic about his new teammates, LeBron also appears to be impressed with the young 76ers star.
"I've worked out and trained with him over the last few summers. Every morning, 5:00 AM, 5:30, whatever it is, we're in the gym. His dedication shows up; he's on time, on target every single day," James said in an interview with NBA on Prime. "He's a guy who just loves the game and is taking full advantage of the opportunity in Philly."
So far this summer, the future seems bright for the 76ers. It'll be interesting to see how the superteam will further work on their chemistry come training camp in September.
