Mavericks President Maintains Clear Stance Over Kyrie Irving & Cooper Flagg’s Future in Dallas

Back in May, when trade chatter around Kyrie Irving was at its loudest, Dallas Mavericks President Masai Ujiri shut it down with a story about Kevin Durant. "Kevin Durant once told me that there's only one Kyrie walking around in the world," Ujiri said.

Five months later, the Mavericks president still stands by that line, and ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported on Monday that Ujiri has made it clear the franchise is committed to keeping Irving with Cooper Flagg, who is 15 years younger than the star point guard.

Windhorst also reported that the plan to keep Irving next to Flagg is facing doubts across the league. The doubts come from rival front offices, who question whether Dallas can stick to that plan with roster holes elsewhere and the two stars on different career timelines.

Technically, the Mavericks are not the ones wavering. The skepticism comes from executives watching Dallas' moves before the trade deadline.

Ujiri's position has been consistent since he arrived. When he was introduced as team president, he said he wanted to see Irving and Flagg together.

"I think it's going to be pretty cool, and I know it's going to help Cooper because Kyrie likes to play off the ball, too," he said. "This is going to be interesting for us."

Later in May, he added that he has been speaking with Irving directly and is confident in how he fits.

The pairing also makes basketball sense on paper. Flagg shot just 29.5% from three last season while leading Dallas with 21 points per game as the Rookie of the Year. Windhorst noted in his ESPN report that Flagg spent much of the summer working on that shot alongside Irving, who is back after 19 months out with a torn left ACL.

Irving's own contract keeps the commitment short-term. His extension can run through 2027-28 only if he activates the final-year player option.

Why Rival Executives Remain Unconvinced

The doubt comes down to timelines. Irving is 34 and has not played a full season since before the injury. Ujiri has also said that every decision from here will be "future-based," built around a "generational" 19-year-old centerpiece.

Those two ideas can coexist for a season. But Windhorst's reports suggested that rivals expect them to collide once Dallas has to choose between competing now and building for later.

The roster only sharpens that tension. Windhorst pointed out that the Mavericks are still climbing out of the hole left by the Luka Doncic trade and the failure of Anthony Davis's tenure, which is why the team has a new coach and a new front office.

The Mavericks have 21 national TV games this season, but not because anyone expects them to contend. Irving's return should help, though other holes remain.

For now, Ujiri has given Irving and Flagg a full season to show the fit works. If it does, the skeptics have to be proven wrong on the court. If it doesn't, Irving's trade value will matter by February, and teams that have been circling him will be ready.
