Chris Paul Sends a Subtle Message After Steve Ballmer & Clippers Suffer NBA Punishment

The NBA closed its Clippers file with a severe punishment. Steve Ballmer was suspended for one year. The franchise was fined $30 million, lost out on five first-round picks, and Kawhi Leonard owes $700,000. Chris Paul did not hold a press conference. He opened Instagram and liked a post that treated the whole thing as "cinema".

Investigators concluded the Clippers circumvented cap rules by helping Leonard land off-court money, including the Aspiration endorsement track that started the probe. Ballmer was barred from league functions and, in practical terms, from the building as an active owner this season.

President of basketball operations Lawrence Frank was suspended for six months. Business president Gillian Zucker was suspended for one year. Leonard’s uncle and former business manager, Dennis Robertson, was banned from league business for five years.

The Clippers, for their part, are not accepting the league’s findings. The team released a statement saying it “vehemently rejects the NBA’s findings, which are the result of a heavily biased investigation seeking to justify a predetermined narrative rather than facts and evidence.”

Paul’s last tour in that building ended in the middle of the night on a road trip. He posted that he had just been sent home. Frank said it was not the right fit.

Paul and Westbrook, who retired in August, are spending their retirement together. Matt Barnes said they were taking their wives on a trip.

The Instagram-like showed two point guards off the clock, watching the franchise that cut Paul and employed them both take the worst hit an NBA owner has seen in years.

The investigation centered on and around a $28 million Aspiration endorsement deal described as a possible no-show arrangement tied to Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. Additional reports revealed a separate deal with Daktronics, the company behind Intuit Dome’s video board.

Commissioner Adam Silver said he wanted the probe wrapped before the 2026–27 season. The NBA hired Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Toronto paused the Ingram-and-picks package after the league said the Raptors would inherit penalty risk. ESPN later reported no evidence that Ballmer funneled money through sponsors.

Pablo Torre released internal Clippers marketing emails, complicating the organization’s defense in a nearly year-long salary-cap investigation. It showed that the staff allegedly coordinated promotional appearances for Kawhi Leonard tied to a previously undisclosed Daktronics sponsorship.

With the league’s punishment now finalized, the long-delayed trade sending Leonard to the Toronto Raptors is believed to be clear to proceed. It brings an end to a saga that froze the deal in place.

“Kawhi Leonard took responsibility for his lapse in judgment and understanding the distraction that this has caused, but the union has also made it clear behind the scenes that in their minds this is a case of a player being taken advantage of by a business representative on his behalf," Shams Charania said. "In this case, this business representative happens to be Kawhi Leonard’s uncle.”

The trade itself had been agreed to in principle since June 30. Toronto was sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two future first-round picks, two second-round picks, and one first-round pick swap to Los Angeles in exchange for Leonard.
