Following a blockbuster offseason trade that sent Julius Randle and Naz Reid to Charlotte for LaMelo Ball, the Minnesota Timberwolves are experiencing a dramatic cultural reset. But while Ball’s arrival brings elite scoring, head coach Chris Finch's recent comments suggest the roster overhaul was as much about curing a toxic locker-room atmosphere as it was about basketball.
Addressing the team's changing culture, Finch offered a candid assessment of Minnesota's past locker-room struggles, admitting that emotional volatility routinely hindered their championship pursuits.
"We referred to ourselves as a moody team in the last couple of years at times, and it's probably gotten in our way," Finch revealed, highlighting the underlying friction that plagued previous postseason runs.
Finch explicitly contrasted the prior locker-room environment with the immediate energy boost provided by his new star guard.
"We've traded moodiness for giddiness, so we've got to kind of get back to some sort of equilibrium. But it's been fun to go to work every day so far," Finch said.
While the head coach stopped short of naming Randle or Reid directly, the timing of his comments sparked widespread speculation about the veterans who previously defined Minnesota's culture.
Finch praised Ball's upbeat personality prior to Minnesota's preseason game, noting how naturally he complements franchise cornerstone Anthony Edwards.
"He's always in a great mood," Finch said. "Always comes in smiling. He and Anthony have a shared quality: They're really hard to stay mad at. And they do some things that you want to get mad at."
This lighthearted dynamic is precisely what Finch believes Minnesota lacked in prior seasons.
Julius Randle and Naz Reid Linked to Minnesota's Previous Atmosphere
The connection between Finch's comments and the departed frontcourt was underscored on the Basketball Illuminati show. The Athletic's senior NBA writer Jon Krawczynski detailed how specific personalities contributed to the brooding environment last season.
"Everyone immediately looks at Julius Randle, and he is certainly one of the culprits... They could be Eeyore every once in a while,” Krawczynski said.
Krawczynski noted that trade rumors involving Giannis Antetokounmpo visibly affected Randle's demeanor.
"Julius certainly was a part of that when his name got brought up in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade talks. He didn't really like that at all, and he wears his heart on his sleeve, so you could see that,” Krawczynski explained.
However, Krawczynski clarified that Randle was not alone in shaping that environment, pointing to other quiet figures on the roster.
"But Naz Reid could get moody, Jaden McDaniels could get moody. Like, there's a lot of quiet, brooding personalities that were in the locker room last year,” Krawczynski said. "You bring LaMelo Ball in here, and he's much more upbeat and energetic, so there's definitely been a vibe shift," Krawczynski added.
Minnesota's gamble on Ball shifts both its offensive ceiling and team identity. Whether this newfound "giddiness" translates to playoff success remains the ultimate test, but Finch and the front office have clearly made their choice: talent without positive energy is no longer acceptable in Minnesota.
