LeBron James believes the Washington Wizards have changed their plans after adding Anthony Davis and Trae Young. Both stars bring experience, scoring, and passing skills to a young team that has spent the last few seasons rebuilding. However, LeBron believes these moves have also raised expectations for the team.
On the Mind the Game show with Steve Nash, James discussed how Washington has shifted away from focusing mainly on young players and draft picks. He believes the Wizards want to compete sooner and could surprise teams in the Eastern Conference during the 2026-27 NBA season.
During their discussion, Nash asked if the NBA's anti-tanking rules and the team's young roster had influenced these moves. James agreed and explained how Washington's plans had changed after adding the two stars.
“Yeah, I mean that's exactly what you just said. There are now they went from, let's work with the lottery balls every year, you know, to now like, okay, like this kind of needs to work,” LeBron James said on Mind The Game Show.
James' comments show that adding star players also brings more pressure. Washington can no longer focus only on developing young players and getting better draft picks. The team must now work towards winning more games.
The Wizards acquired Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks in January 2026. They sent CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert to Atlanta.
Washington later acquired Davis from the Dallas Mavericks in February. These moves brought two experienced stars to a team that had focused on developing young talent.
Young is a four-time All-Star known for his passing skills. He led the NBA with 11.6 assists per game in the 2024-25 season. Davis is a 10-time All-Star and an NBA champion.
He can score, grab rebounds, block shots, and defend well. James explained how both players could help Washington compete sooner than expected.
“You know, you look at a perennial All-Star, a guy who's led the league in assists, has been top, one of the top scorers in our league, and Trey Young who kind of facilitates the whole team,” LeBron said.
James then spoke about Davis' defence and championship experience. He explained why the big man could help the team improve quickly.
“Um, and uh, obviously AD, one of the best two-way players that we have in our league and an NBA champion as well, you know, is kind of fast-tracked.,” James said.
Davis gives Washington an experienced player who can make a difference on both ends of the court. His partnership with Young could also help the team's younger players learn from two established stars. At the same time, the Wizards now have a clearer chance to compete in the Eastern Conference.
Wizards could surprise the Eastern Conference
LeBron James agreed that Washington could start competing sooner than planned. However, the Wizards still need to develop young players like Alex Sarr. Davis and Young must also stay healthy and play well together.
James also highlighted Washington's young talent. The team now has both young prospects and experienced stars, giving it more options than before.
“Maybe a little bit sooner, like you said, than they would. Maybe I don't know as a franchise, maybe they want it, but this is what it is,” James said.
James believes Washington has raised expectations by adding two stars. Now, the Wizards must turn their talent into regular wins throughout the season.
Washington showed some early promise during the preseason. Davis scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds against the New York Knicks on October 8. Young finished with 15 points, four assists, and two steals. The Wizards won the game 111-109.
Davis then recorded 10 points, 11 rebounds and four assists against Detroit on October 10. Washington won that game 114-108 in overtime. These results give the team some early positives, but preseason games cannot show how well a team will perform during the regular season.
James believes Washington has enough talent to become more competitive after spending recent seasons rebuilding. He did not promise that the team would succeed, but he showed interest in seeing how the new group performs.
He ended his comments by talking about the Wizards' young players and the team's potential to surprise people.
“So they have uh you know they got some really good pieces and I'm looking forward to seeing what what what comes out of it,” James said.
Washington must now develop its young players while meeting the higher expectations that come with adding Davis and Young.
If both stars stay healthy and the team builds good chemistry, the Wizards could become a stronger team in the Eastern Conference. Their regular-season performances will show whether this new approach can help them take the next step.
