Since the departure of LeBron James, the Los Angeles Lakers have been in full rebuild mode. With Luka Doncic now as their leader, the Lakers organization has been doing everything it can to satisfy his needs. However, it appears that the team is navigating more than a roster reshape - Mark Walter has agreed to sell his controlling interest in the franchise amid ongoing federal and SEC scrutiny of his broader financial holdings.

According to sports insider Joe Pompliano, Bloomberg reported that Walter’s firm TWG Global has been in talks with investors to raise money to help pay down loans held by his insurance companies that are under investigation.

"Mark Walter has been in talks with investors to raise money to pay down the loans he is being investigated for," Pompliano wrote on X. "That's why he sold the Lakers for $12.5B — in a deal that came together in just 72 hours — less than two years after he purchased the team."

Walter’s insurance companies Delaware Life and Clear Spring, along with related entities including Guggenheim Partners, are under investigation by federal prosecutors in Manhattan and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Authorities are examining roughly $16 billion in private-credit deals and related-party transactions that passed through third parties and ended up on the insurers’ books without proper disclosure as affiliated investments.

The companies received grand jury subpoenas, later reclassified large portions of these holdings after internal reviews found reporting errors, and the FBI previously seized Walter’s phone and computer.

No charges have been filed against Walter or his companies, and his sports teams are not described as targets of the probe.

The transaction values the Lakers at $12.5 billion and involves the sale of Walter’s controlling stake acquired from the Buss family at a $10 billion valuation roughly 14 months earlier, to a group led by Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger.

Kushner and Iger are waiting for the NBA Board of Governors' approval before the deal can close. Walter retains ownership of the Dodgers and other assets - the sale does not include the Buss family’s remaining shares, and Jeanie Buss is expected to continue in her governor role for a period.

Former NBA Star Could Join Lakers Discussions Due to Bob Iger

Now that Bob Iger is set to become one of the owners of the Los Angeles Lakers, NBA insider Ramona Shelburne noted that a former NBA star could join the team as part of the coaching staff.

Fellow insider Dave McMenamin noted on NBA Today that Lakers head coach JJ Redick recently got his contract extended.

"JJ Redick got an extension after his rookie year as a head coach with the Lakers," McMenamin said. "My understanding is it aligns his contract with Rob Pelinka's…I think JJ Redick's probably in a really good spot here…but will have to see where all this goes."

While it’s clear that the Lakers organization still wants Redick to lead the team, Shelburne highlighted the longstanding relationship between Paul and Iger.

“There’s a couple of names you should pay attention to: Chris Paul, a very close friend of Bob Iger’s,” Shelburne said on NBA Today. “He’s sort of a mentor to Chris Paul. Chris recently retired. He’s available; incredible basketball mind. I don’t know what that means for him, but I expect they’ll be talking.”

Chris Paul retired in February 2026 after 21 NBA seasons. If discussions materialize, Lakers fans could see a familiar name connected to the franchise in a new capacity, though no coaching role or formal arrangement has been confirmed.

Back in the late 2000s, CP3 was reportedly headed to the Lakers to team up with Kobe Bryant before then-Commissioner David Stern blocked the deal. That chapter never happened on the court- any future involvement under the new ownership group remains to be seen for now.
