Kristaps Porziņģis' uncertain health has become one of the biggest questions surrounding the Golden State Warriors heading into the 2026–27 season. Earlier this October, Porziņģis missed training camp and the entire preseason after informing the team that he was dealing with an ongoing health issue. However, ESPN insider Shams Charania has now reported that Porziņģis is experiencing recurring symptoms associated with POTS and is seriously contemplating his future in basketball.
"Golden State has started exploring trade routes for Kristaps Porzingis, who is now seriously contemplating his future in basketball as he deals with recurring symptoms from the autoimmune condition termed as POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), sources tell ESPN," Charania wrote on X.
Porziņģis previously disclosed that he was diagnosed with POTS in 2025 while playing for the Boston Celtics. POTS is a condition involving dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, which helps regulate functions such as heart rate and blood pressure. Symptoms can include an excessive increase in heart rate upon standing, dizziness, fatigue and exercise intolerance.
However, Porziņģis' current symptoms have not been publicly detailed, and the Warriors have not confirmed whether POTS is responsible for his latest absence.
Although the Warriors are reportedly exploring trade options, Porziņģis' uncertain availability could complicate negotiations with potential suitors. Acquiring him would involve considerable uncertainty, particularly if his health prevents him from returning to the court.
Charania's report also raises the possibility that Porziņģis could step away from basketball, although no retirement decision has been announced. POTS can affect exercise tolerance and cause symptoms that interfere with athletic performance, but its severity varies from person to person.
Persistent symptoms could pose a significant challenge for an elite basketball player, though it is premature to conclude that the condition will end Porziņģis' career. His individual prognosis will depend on his health and response to treatment.
Basketball's repeated high-intensity efforts, changes of direction and cardiovascular demands could make persistent POTS symptoms particularly challenging. However, the impact on an individual player's ability to compete depends on symptom severity and response to treatment.
For now, the Warriors must weigh Porziņģis' uncertain availability against their need for frontcourt depth and the options available to them in the trade market.
Warriors Release Statement on Kristaps Porzingis' Illness
Now that we know that Kristaps Porzingis is dealing with POTS again, Golden State Warriors fans are curious to know what could be going through the team's mind. As of this writing, the Warriors are set to face the Los Angeles Lakers in their season opener, meaning it's still early in the season. The Warriors have plenty of time to find a replacement at the center position.
While everyone is dying to know what the next move is, the Warriors are looking to remain quiet about the situation. Immediately after the reports about Porzingis' illness, Golden State released a statement on social media.
"In response to today's media report regarding Kristaps Porzingis, we are not going to comment on trade speculation or reports regarding his health-related matter or future," the statement reads on X.
"As noted last week, conversations between the Warriors, Kristaps, and his representatives will remain private," the statement continues. "We are not anticipating Kristaps being around the team in the immediate future. We'll provide additional updates when available and appropriate."
Having all that in mind, all fans can do now is pray and hope for the best for Porzingis. While we don't want to see his career end abruptly, if he has to hang up the laces, it's probably for the best to ensure his safety.
