Timberwolves & Others Monitoring Giannis Antetokounmpo Situation Because of Victor Wembanyama's Rise

May 23, 2026, 12:00 AM CUT

Giannis Antetokounmpo could solve many problems for whichever team he's on. He's athletic, he's massive, and he contributes to winning on both ends of the floor. That's why it only makes sense that the Minnesota Timberwolves view him as an answer to an emerging rival.

The Timberwolves have become a familiar sight in the playoffs the past few seasons, thanks in large part to the rise of Anthony Edwards. With his growth, it looked like the Wolves were only a few pieces away from true championship contention.

In 2024 and 2025, they made it as far as the conference finals. From there, it looked like they only needed to find the right supporting cast for Edwards. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs rose to prominence.

All of a sudden, the Timberwolves could not get back to that same stage of the postseason. While it was only the first time they faced each other in the playoffs with their current stars, it served as an indication that there's a new obstacle in their way, and that they may be further from their goal now than they were two seasons ago.

It's a painful reminder of how a star with the right supporting cast can absolutely dominate if left unchecked. It happened league-wide in the 90s with Michael Jordan. Then again, in the Eastern Conference during LeBron James' run of dominance. Now, it looks like history will repeat itself in the West with Wemby and the Spurs.

Wemby's effect seems to reverberate louder in Minnesota than anywhere else for two reasons. First, they're in the same conference, so it is an immediate problem. Second, they are among the few with the right pieces to engineer a solution.

Currently, the Wolves have Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle. Both proved ineffective in stopping Wemby. However, they are still considered all-star-caliber players who might be coveted elsewhere.

According to NBA reporter Evan Sidery, Gobert and Randle will be the two main pieces the Wolves will dangle to acquire Antetokounmpo. However, it seems they won't be the only assets in play.

Sidery also said the Wolves are looking to put together a multi-team deal that will ultimately pair the Greek Freak with Edwards and Jaden McDaniels to create a superstar trio that can counter the Spurs.

At a glance, it certainly seems like Giannis Antetokounmpo is the anti-Wembanyama, especially if one were to look at the few battles they've had so far.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Has Outplayed Victor Wembanyama So Far

Giannis Antetokounmpo has the right physical attributes to counter Victor Wembanyama.

The two-time league MVP and one-time DPOY is stronger, so he can certainly outmuscle Wemby in the paint. If Wemby wants to operate in the perimeter, Antetokounmpo has the perfect combination of length and speed to counter.

Add the fact that Antetokounmpo is not afraid to get physical, and he looks like he could beat the Spurs star one-on-one. In fact, he's already shown that he could when he drove straight at Wemby and muscled him out of the way for a clear lane to the basket in a 2024 matchup.

Beyond that, the stats also show that Antetokounmpo has outplayed Wemby when they've faced off. In the four games they've played against each other so far, the Greek star has averaged 31.3 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 5.5 assists.

Meanwhile, Wemby put up 22.3 points, 10.8 boards, and 1.0 dimes. Those are still remarkable numbers, but they are what qualify as "containing" him.

To further contextualise this, Antetokounmpo has outscored Wemby three times in four matchups. He's also out-rebounded him in two games. It is only a small sample size, but so far it looks like it's the closest anyone can get to outplaying Wemby one-on-one.
