Steve Ballmer’s Replacement & New Clippers CEO Sends Direct Message to Kawhi Leonard, Ty Lue & Others

When the Clippers named lawyer John Gibson interim CEO and governor earlier this week, fans' reaction was anything but welcoming. Just days later, Gibson responded to that skepticism, issuing his first public message to the roster and fan base as he steps in for suspended owner Steve Ballmer.

Gibson used the statement to lay out the organizational changes he's already made since taking over.

"I have met with General Manager Trent Redden, our basketball leadership team, and Head Coach Ty Lue," Gibson said. "I have appointed Trent to serve as Interim President of Basketball Operations while Lawrence Frank is away from the team. And I have appointed Mark Hughes to serve as Interim General Manager."

Gibson also made a point of publicly backing the head coach amid the front office shakeup. "Ty Lue remains our head coach, and we have complete confidence in his leadership," Gibson said. "Ty has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to overcome adversity, unite teams, and inspire players to perform at their best. His leadership will be instrumental as we move forward."

Gibson also confirmed the finalized trade sending Kawhi Leonard to Toronto, closing the book on the saga that led to Ballmer's suspension. "We have also completed our trade with Toronto," Gibson said. "We thank Kawhi for his contributions on the court and wish him well."

In his place, the Clippers welcome Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, Rui Hachimura and Max Strus. They join a core that already includes Darius Garland, Brook Lopez and rookie Kobe Sanders, giving Gibson a fully reshaped roster to build his message of accountability around.

Gibson also made a promise of institutional reform. He acknowledged the fallout from the league's cap-circumvention findings without dwelling on it. "We are conducting a thoughtful and comprehensive review of both basketball and business operations to ensure every decision supports a winning culture," he said, later adding a pledge to "strengthen our culture of compliance" as part of the path forward.

That pledge lands against the skepticism that greeted Gibson's appointment. Critics questioned whether another executive shuffle could actually fix an organization now working through a $30 million fine and the loss of five future first-round picks.

Gibson closed his statement with an appeal to unity, saying, "Let's write the next great chapter in the history of this franchise... let's do it together."

For a fan base that's watched the Clippers go from playoff disappointment to a league-level scandal in the span of a single offseason, that chapter will need to start showing results fast to match the confidence in Gibson's words.
