Skip Bayless Reveals Why Russell Westbrook Doesn’t Deserve to Be a Hall of Famer

Russell Westbrook ended an 18-year NBA career with a cinematic retirement video narrated by Michael B. Jordan. He drew an outpouring of tributes from players and fans across the league. Less than 24 hours later, one of his longest-running critics used that same moment to make sure the celebration didn’t go entirely unchallenged.

Skip Bayless posted a video reacting to Westbrook’s retirement. He acknowledged the numbers while rejecting the Hall of Fame consensus building around them.

“Obviously, his numbers say slam dunk, first-ballot Hall of Famer. But I’ve been consistent in my stance about Russell Westbrook, my view of Russell Westbrook’s game,” Bayless said. “He would not be in my Hall of Fame."

Bayless’s reasoning wasn’t new. He’s argued against Westbrook for the better part of a decade, centered on turnovers, shooting inefficiency and a perceived gap between his individual statistics and actual team success.

He’s the analyst credited with coining the nickname “Westbrick.” A jab aimed at Westbrook’s inconsistent three-point shooting that stuck with him through the final stretch of his career in Oklahoma City and his subsequent stops with the Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets and Kings.

Even in his critical video, Bayless made a point of acknowledging Westbrook’s effort and durability.

“A lot of punishment, and he kept fighting. I admire that greatly, and I have no doubt Russell Westbrook will be in the Hall of Fame. No doubt, first-ballot Hall of Famer,” he said, before adding, “But I leave you with this. He would not be in mine.”

Westbrook’s retirement post went up on Wednesday to widespread celebration across the NBA world, with players past and present publicly honoring his career. Draymond Green was not impressed with the love, calling out fans for their harsh treatment.

He retires as a nine-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA selection, two-time scoring champion, the 2017 NBA MVP, and the NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles with 209. A mark he extended during his final season in Sacramento.

He also won Olympic gold with Team USA in 2012 and, alongside LeBron James, is one of only two players in league history to reach both 25,000 career points and 10,000 assists. Westbrook was selected fourth overall in the 2008 NBA Draft out of UCLA by the Seattle SuperSonics, just before the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City.

He spent 11 years there, reached one NBA Finals, and carried a franchise through a Kevin Durant departure. He won an MVP the very next season by averaging a triple-double for the year.

For most fans and analysts, that combination places Westbrook comfortably among the most accomplished guards of his generation, making Bayless’s dissent feel to critics like a take struck on a day built for celebration rather than scrutiny.
