Securities Step In as Spurs Fan Storms Into Court During NBA Finals for Victor Wembanyama Moment

Jun 4, 2026, 5:07 PM CUT

Two of the NBA's most passionate fanbases are going head to head in the 2026 NBA Finals, and Game 1 was a chance for the San Antonio faithful to shine at home. However, the excitement quickly turned chaotic when one supporter decided he could simply walk onto the hardwood and hug the best player on his team.

For Victor Wembanyama, Wednesday night's Game 1 against the New York Knicks was his biggest dance in the NBA yet, but a fan in attendance disrespectfully interrupted the game.

With 6:28 remaining in the fourth quarter, the fan ran straight toward Wembanyama and attempted to take a selfie with him. All this happened while the Spurs were battling to get back into the game. The Knicks held a 92-86 lead at the time, and neither team would have appreciated such a disruption during such a crucial moment.

Thankfully, security managed to get a hold of the reckless fan and kick him out of the arena. He has also been issued a lifetime ban from attending any NBA game. In fact, an unnamed aide who helped him in this situation was also handed the same punishment.

"The individual who entered the court area during Game 1 of The Finals was arrested & will be banned for life from all NBA arenas. A second individual will also receive a lifetime ban for his role in the incident," a statement released by the NBA read.

Wembanyama was understandably perplexed. He was smiling sheepishly when the incident was unfolding, and later admitted that he had no idea what to do.

“I've never been in that situation. I didn't know how to act. It really surprised me..." the Frenchman said when asked about the situation post-game.

The fan appeared to be attempting a harmless stunt, but it was a security lapse nonetheless, and one that officials at the Frost Bank Center will likely review closely before Game 2 on Friday.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, however, did not want to give the incident too much importance. When asked for his thoughts, he simply shifted the focus back to basketball, likely to avoid giving further attention to the individual involved. He calmly replied that they moved on "to the next play" as soon as the fan was escorted off the court.

Unfortunately for the Spurs, the next few moments of the game did not go in their favor.

Victor Wembanyama Crumbled in Game 1

It wasn't an ideal start to the NBA Finals for the Spurs, who failed to capitalize on their home-court advantage in Game 1. The Knicks came away with a 105-95 victory, powered by a 30-point performance from Jalen Brunson.

There were signs that the former No. 1 pick was cracking under pressure.

During the fourth quarter of Wednesday's game, Wembanyama missed a couple of crucial shots that could have helped the Spurs close the gap. With 4:18 remaining, Wemby threw up a floater that struck the side of the backboard. The Spurs retained possession and got the ball back to him in the corner for a three-pointer with 4:08 left, but that attempt ended up hitting the top of the backboard as well.

From that point on, Wembanyama went cold, missing several key attempts as the Spurs slipped further behind. He ultimately finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and one steal.

His numbers may look good on paper, but it's worth noting that 12 of his 26 points came from the free-throw line. In other words, he scored just 14 points from the field.

Similar to his Game 5 performance in the Western Conference Finals, Wembanyama struggled with his shooting efficiency. He shot 22.2% from beyond the arc and 28.5% from the field overall. The last time he endured a shooting night like that, the Spurs ended up on the losing side, and Game 1 of the Finals followed a similar script.

The good news for San Antonio is that there is still a long way to go in this series. The Spurs will once again have home-court advantage in Game 2, and fans will be hoping Wembanyama can snap out of his cold spell on Friday. Another loss would put the Spurs in a difficult position, as the Knicks would take a 2-0 lead heading back to New York for Games 3 and 4, giving them a significant advantage in the series.
