Fans hoping LeBron James would join the Philadelphia 76ers got their hopes up, only to have them dashed immediately after. While addressing the crowd at Fanatics Fest in New York, James used the phrase “trust the process”, a slogan inseparably tied to Joel Embiid and the Sixers, creating instant cheers and speculation.

“I want to join a franchise that kind of shares the same model as myself,” James said, as shared by Underdog NBA on X. “That’s like practicing championship habits every day, but trusting the process more than anything.”

While James was continuing to speak, the crowd started to react, and the 41-year-old star immediately realized what was happening. He quickly informed the fans that it was in no way a hint that he was joining the Philadelphia 76ers next.

“I’ve been saying ‘trust the process’ since I was drafted in 2003,” he told fans, making it clear the comment was not about the Sixers or Embiid.

“Trust the Process” became a popular phrase in Philadelphia during the mid-2010s, popularized by Joel Embiid as the franchise rebuilt through years of losing seasons. Embiid embraced the nickname “The Process,” and the phrase has since become synonymous with the Sixers’ identity.

That history explains why James’ casual use of the slogan immediately set off speculation.

The Sixers are one of several frontrunners, though not solely because of Embiid. Instead, Philadelphia is being considered a landing spot for the four-time champion after they acquired Jaylen Brown in a trade.

Also, rising star Tyrese Maxey can't be forgotten. He was named the Most Improved Player in 2024, which is the same year he made his first All-Star team. Last season, Maxey earned his second All-Star nod and was named to the All-NBA Third Team for the first time in his career.

Despite how stacked they are, though, they are not the only frontrunners to acquire James.

Beyond the Philadelphia Sixers: The Other Frontrunners for LeBron James

The Philadelphia 76ers are competing with two other Eastern Conference teams for LeBron James. And unlike the Sixers, these two have a historical connection to the 41-year-old legend.

There's the Cleveland Cavaliers, located in James' home state of Ohio. Not only is it considered home in a literal sense, but it was also the place where he began his NBA career in 2003 and the place where he won his third championship in 2016.

Then, there's the Miami Heat. The Heat was where James started his villain arc when he signed there in 2010.

He won the first two titles of his career there in 2012 and 2013. In 2014, he departed Miami to begin his redemption arc by going back to the Cavaliers.

Aside from these two Eastern Conference squads, there are also a couple of Western Conference teams considered to be in the running.

The new-look Minnesota Timberwolves, with their backcourt duo of guard LaMelo Ball and rising star Anthony Edwards, need to add a forward.

James is being touted as the perfect addition alongside these two young, exciting guards, with the expectation that he can elevate them into title contenders.

Finally, there's the Golden State Warriors. Many basketball enthusiasts have long been curious about what James and Stephen Curry can do together in an NBA season.

Fans already caught glimpses of this in All-Star games and during the 2024 Olympics. What people saw has left them asking for more, and this summer, there's a real chance that this pairing finally comes true. But for that, we will have to wait till the final decision comes from LeBron James.
