Kyrie Irving spent all of the 2025-26 season on the sidelines after tearing his ACL in March 2025. He watched as Cooper Flagg rose to Rookie of the Year in his absence. Now fully healthy and back in the gym, Irving isn't just focused on returning to the court; he's reshaping how the Mavericks approach recovery altogether, and the franchise just gave him what he asked for.
Irving has been vocal about the importance of recovery as he works his way back. The Mavericks responded by building an in-house setup designed around exactly that. The team's revamped facility now includes an 8-foot walk-in sauna built to ensure players can recover comfortably, along with a wet room, a steam room, and a cold plunge.

ESPN's Tim MacMahon addressed that tension. He laid out why so many around the league are watching Irving's situation closely.
"Question that's being asked around the league is... how long is this fit with Kyrie and the Mavericks," MacMahon said. "It's not because the Mavericks don't love Kyrie. They do. It's not because Kyrie doesn't love Dallas and hasn't enjoyed his experience there... he has, but they're building around a 19-year-old prodigy in Cooper Flagg."
MacMahon didn't rule out a split. "So could there come a time when it makes sense for both sides to find a contender for Kyrie to go to?" he said. "These are the kind of things that people around the league will be monitoring leading up to the trade deadline."
It makes Irving's push for a better recovery setup feel like more than just what he wants. It's a signal that, at least for now, he's building for a future in Dallas rather than treating this season as a placeholder.
Even as the rest of the league keeps one eye on the trade deadline, just in case the Mavs' Flagg timeline forces a change neither side wants.
