Winning the Conference Finals is by no means an achievement to diminish, but in the grander scheme of things, it's just a stepping stone to immortality. And in the 2026 Finals, a difference in approach between the Knicks and the Spurs may very well have been what led to the outcome.

The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 4-1, ending a 53-year championship drought. And for them, that's the only goal they had in mind, which kept them grounded after their 4-0 sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the ECF. The Spurs meanwhile, looked like they had already achieved the ultimate goal by dethroning defending champs and the pick for many to go back-to-back, the OKC Thunder. And that's what Josh Hart admitted he pointed to Jalen Brunson.

"Everyone was talking to (the Spurs) about, 'Yo! They gotta beat OKC. OKC is going to repeat," Hart shared on the Roomates Show. "Then, they beat OKC. That was the mountaintop for them. I look at (Jalen Brunson), I was like, 'You see that reaction because they think they gonna win it. They think it's over.'"

"Then you look at our reaction after we beat Cleveland, and it was tough to celebrate," Hart continued. "We were like, 'We got four more.' Obviously, winning the Eastern Conference was an amazing accomplishment. But we all looked at that like, 'This is all just a step. This isn't the destination.'"

For the Spurs, a seven-game victory over the Thunder was reason enough to celebrate. They are a young team led by a 22-year-old superstar in Victor Wembanyama. They had just defeated the team with the best record in the league (64-18). Wembanyama averaged 27.3 ppg, 11 rpg, and nearly 3 bpg, winning Western Conference Finals MVP in the process. Immediately after the victory, he spoke about how it had been a "childhood dream" of his just to reach the NBA Finals. There's nothing wrong with that, but it stood in stark contrast to how Brunson reacted.

True enough, the Finals MVP embodied the "Mamba Mentality" by staying away from the trophy, refusing to discuss the emotions of reaching the Finals, and avoiding any premature celebrations. During the Finals, sports analyst Malika Andrews noted that Brunson didn't want to be anywhere near the trophy, pose for photos with it, or even be in the same room as the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

When asked why he wasn't celebrating after the Knicks' Game 1 win or standing next to the trophy, Brunson simply replied, "No comment," during the postgame press conference.

After five games, though, it was Brunson who went back home to New York with the title in his grasp.

Karl-Anthony Towns Reveals His Promise With Jalen Brunson

Back in the 2024-25 season, Karl-Anthony Towns was traded to the New York Knicks as part of a three-team trade involving the Minnesota Timberwolves and Charlotte Hornets. While Minnesota became like home for Towns, moving to New York was a blessing in disguise.

Towns joined a Knicks roster led by Brunson, who had arrived two years earlier. As a result, he had to adjust to a new reality. Despite once being the face of the Timberwolves, KAT understood that his role would be different in New York. Rather than disrupting the team's chemistry, Towns embraced the change and even made a promise to Brunson.

In a recent interview involving Brunson, the big man shared how he vowed to help him turn into the star that he is today. The only thing he wanted in return was an NBA championship.

"I told you that the first day I got here, and you welcomed me here to New York, I said, 'I want to make sure I amplify you to a whole other level that you haven't even recognized for yourself. I want to be that partner in crime that you haven't had, and I want to make sure that every step of the way, anytime you go anywhere, you're never alone," Towns told the former Dallas Mavericks guard.

"You always have someone behind you that's ready to do whatever it is to protect you, to protect this city. And I only ask for one thing in return. One thing." Towns continued, before pointing directly at the Larry O'Brien trophy.

Brunson didn't take too much time to deliver his promise to Towns. In their first season together as a Knicks duo, New York made it all the way to the 2025 Eastern Conference Finals. While they ultimately lost to the Indiana Pacers, it was a good sign for the Knicks, proving that they already had what it took to make a deep playoff run.

Brunson and company vowed to come back stronger than before, and true enough, they delivered. In his first finals appearance, Brunson led the Knicks to his first championship victory, becoming the first player in league history to be named the NBA Cup MVP, Eastern Conference Finals MVP, and NBA Finals MVP in the same season.
