Klay Thompson Denies Father’s Lakers Request as New Details Behind Heat Move Emerge

Mychal Thompson has spent years trying to get his son to finish his career as a Laker. He is a Showtime champion and still part of the Lakers’ radio broadcast. After Dallas bought Klay Thompson out, the pitch came again. This time the answer was still Miami.

Mychal said he tried to send Klay home to Los Angeles.

“I tried to persuade him to come back to LA and come home," Mychal said on Locked On Heat. "But playing with Giannis, Bam and for Pat Riley and Spoelstra was just too much of an attraction for him to turn down.”

It was not the first time the father lost the argument. In 2024, Mychal believed Klay was a perfect fit alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Klay agreed only “to a certain point,” then chose Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in Dallas instead.

After that experiment ended, Mychal tried again. The Heat’s combination of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, and the Riley-Spoelstra lineup outweighed the appeal of a return to the city where Klay grew up.

Klay Thompson cleared waivers and signed with Miami almost immediately. The basketball case was having a career shooter next to two interior stars who draw help.

There was no player-for-player trade. Dallas bought Klay Thompson out of the final year of the three-year, $50 million contract he signed when he left Golden State.

He was due $17.5 million for 2026-27. In the buyout he gave up about $9.8 million of that salary. The Mavericks kept roughly $7.7 million in dead money, a split that dropped them further under the luxury-tax line and away from the first apron. Thompson was waived Friday and had to clear waivers Sunday before he could sign elsewhere.

Once he cleared, Miami completed a two-year deal that starts near $5.6 million. There's a player option around $5.88 million for 2027-28, well below the veteran number he left on the table in Dallas.

Klay wants a fifth championship before the likes of Stephen Curry, LeBron James, and Draymond Green, who are also still chasing another ring.
