Kevin Durant Ends X Exile, Drops Fiery Response Against Suns Owner for Saying He Regrets Trading for Him

Kevin Durant called a TV segment questioning his blame for the Suns' collapse "propaganda" in 2025, and he has now found another version of his Phoenix years that he refuses to accept. The Houston Rockets star, who had moved to Threads, logged back into X on Saturday to answer owner Mat Ishbia directly.

The target was a CNBC Sport interview in which Ishbia treated the Durant trade as a lesson in what not to do.

Durant did not hold back. "#blameKD even though KD stayed on top of his game at 36 and got u back this 'culture' you love so much," he wrote. "Aye, Matthew acts like I got arrested for a DUI or sumn. Back to threads." He was replying to a clip of Ishbia saying, "I kind of just threw money at the problem."

Per the interview, Ishbia's point was that the Suns had no clear identity when they landed Durant. He said there was no defined culture or "north star," so adding a superstar did not guarantee a title. Ishbia also said his lesson was "not positive or negative" about Durant, and that he is now personally involved in decisions from the first man on the roster to the 14th.

Durant's reply leaned on production. He averaged 26.6 points, 6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in his final Suns season and led the team in scoring while Phoenix finished 36-46.

The results still fell short of the plan. Phoenix won only one playoff series in two and a half seasons with him.

The price of the bet helps explain why the topic remains sensitive. The February 2023 deal sent Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson, four unprotected first-round picks and a pick swap to Brooklyn. The Suns then sent Durant to Houston in 2025 for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick and other assets. Ishbia's comments are part of a longer pattern.

This is not Ishbia's first look back. In July 2025, he told SiriusXM that he had failed to set a vision and identity from day one, and that adding money was "not how it works." At that year's media day, he said it "didn't work" with Durant but wished him well. In September, a TSN video carried his claim that he "didn't do enough" when Durant was in Phoenix.

Ishbia also says the new approach is working. He pointed out that the Suns were expected to be the worst team in the league, yet made the playoffs and won 45 games.

Durant, meanwhile, faces his own version of the culture question. Some analysts have pointed to a perceived disconnect in Houston's locker room and expect him to lead the Rockets' young core.

So the exchange is about more than one tweet. Ishbia is defending a new Suns identity built without Durant, while Durant is defending a Phoenix tenure he says was productive and unfairly framed.

Both sides still have something to prove, and a deep Rockets playoff run would be the strongest reply Durant could offer.
