Jonathan Kuminga’s Agent Reveals Tension Between Steve Kerr and Warriors Front Office Over His Future

Former Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga was caught in the middle of "probably the weirdest negotiation of all time," according to his agent Aaron Turner. Turner revealed that head coach Steve Kerr and owner Joe Lacob were openly sending conflicting messages about Kuminga’s value to the franchise.

“You’ll never see again where a Hall of Fame coach comes out and says, ‘This guy, JK, he’s a really good, talented player, but he doesn’t fit the roster with Draymond and Jimmy,’” Turner said on FanDuel’s Run It Back with Chandler Parsons.

“JK could have and would have taken the QO last year," Turner added. "But in the end, the reality was, he couldn’t bet on himself there, because there was no bet to make... It was 'you don’t fit.' So there was no bet to take last year.”

Faced with an uncertain role under Kerr, Kuminga and his representative chose the shortest deal available to ensure he could eventually be moved. While Golden State countered with longer structures, including a three-year framework that could have guaranteed $48 million, Kuminga opted for a shorter $24 million deal with a guaranteed trade kicker to keep his options open.

“It was not a great scene, the first half of the year in Golden State last year,” Turner admitted.

The Clashing Messages That Forced an Exit

The unresolved tension over minutes and roster fit ultimately led to Kuminga being traded to the Atlanta Hawks. After completing that stint, Kuminga entered free agency and recently agreed to a two-year, $13 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Turner emphasized that the primary issue was the public mismatch between the front office's valuation and the coaching staff's scheme. A head coach declaring to the entire league that a player does not fit alongside core veterans like Draymond Green severely undermined any high-dollar offer the front office put on the table.

By speaking out, Turner confirmed what many suspected about Golden State's internal dynamics. Steve Kerr saw a structural mismatch, while Joe Lacob and the front office saw a $20-million-plus talent, a fundamental disagreement that ultimately pushed Kuminga out of Golden State and toward a fresh start in Minnesota.
