Jayson Tatum could’ve been yet another unfortunate headline in the 2026-27 NBA campaign’s already notorious injury reports, but the Boston Celtics delivered quite the performance in their second road game of the season, closing the night against the Orlando Magic 108-97.
In the closing seconds of the first quarter, with the ball in Tatum's possession, the Celtics star inadvertently bumped heads with the Magic's Jamal Cain while trying to get past him with a spin. A clip of the incident and the aftermath was shared by @MrBuckBuckNBA on X, which showed Tatum bleeding from the side of his head after the collision.
Shortly after, he walked off the court with a cloth on his head to stop the bleeding. Seeing a bleeding Tatum walking away from the court definitely got fans worried, as Mitchell Robinson already remains sidelined and the team’s pretty vulnerable without these offensive hubs.
However, with 6:13 left in the first half, Tatum made his way back to the court, and the Celtics didn’t look back anymore.
While Tatum’s game-high 32 points, seven assists, and four rebounds were the highlight for sure, Boston had five players drop double digits that night. Paul George went for 17 points, eight assists, and six rebounds, while Derrick White added 12 points, two assists, and two rebounds.
Coming off the bench, Luka Garza racked up 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists in 21 minutes of action. Lastly, Baylor Scheierman also poured in 10 points and two rebounds.
Tatum’s grit here calls for applause. The bleeding Celtics forward had the collision; he didn’t get a foul call, and the incident was ruled a backcourt violation on the Celtics after he lost possession.
But not only did he come back after a brief medical break, but the 28-year-old also played 34 long minutes, went 8-of-19 from the field, converted once from beyond the arc, and made a staggering 15-of-17 free throws to emerge victorious.
He helped Boston build a 15-point lead in the second half. Although the Magic tried to turn the tables with Tristan Da Silva and Anthony Black both scoring 23 points, along with Silva’s 10 rebounds and Black’s eight, a victory wasn’t possible.
The Celtics didn’t allow them to get into the charity stripe often, giving away 19 FTs to the Magic, of which they converted 15. In comparison, the Celtics converted 22 of 26. The Magic also took fewer 3P attempts (14-of-39) than the Celtics (12-of-44), but scored more in that area.
While Tatum definitely deserves his flowers, so does the team for not collapsing under pressure during his brief absence. The team that opened its season with a loss now has five wins on a trot. Props to them for balancing the assignments, regrouping, and holding up steadily.
The Celtics now head to Houston to face the Rockets on Monday night.
