Jayson Tatum Gets Honest About His Relationship With Jaylen Brown

Back at his Philadelphia introductory press conference, Jaylen Brown was guarded when asked about his relationship with Jayson Tatum. He admitted that the two hadn't spoken much since the trade, offering little beyond a measured "nothing but respect."

Two months later, Tatum has finally given his own side of that same story. Appearing on The Dan Patrick Show, Tatum was asked what the biggest misconception is about his relationship with Brown following the trade that sent him to Philadelphia.

"There are so many different narratives and so many different opinions and speculations," Tatum said. "For me, I love that guy. What we were able to accomplish together in nine years... you can't talk about him without talking about me and vice versa."

Tatum, much like Brown before him, spent months deflecting rather than addressing their relationship strain rumors. After the trade, Tatum offered a similarly warm but vague response on the TODAY show, saying he had "nothing but love and respect for Jaylen" while acknowledging "it's tough when you're a professional athlete and everything we do is publicized and nit-picked."

Jaylen Brown and Tatum spent nine years together. They had five Eastern Conference Finals appearances, two NBA Finals trips, a shared championship in 2024, and multiple All-Star Games. "Nobody has ever played together forever," Tatum added, "but it's not like a thing to be sad or upset about."

Shams Charania reported in July that the personal relationship between Tatum and Brown had become "as close to nonexistent as you could have" in their final year together.

Tatum pushed back during his TODAY show appearance the day after that report aired, saying, "They tried to pin us against each other and say one guy shouldn't be here, but the truth is we had nine amazing years together."

Former Celtics forward Grant Williams described the relationship in similarly warm terms during an August appearance. He dismissed the idea of real beef between the two.

"They had respect for one another. They enjoyed being around one another on the court... they didn't have any disdain for each other off the floor," Williams said. "That's something I can vividly say - I don't think those guys dislike each other at all."

Brown has kept his remarks brief and forward-looking. He declined to elaborate on specifics of how the trade came together or the state of communication between them since.
