Jalen Brunson’s Father Reveals How Mike Brown Helped Knicks Overcome Locker-Room Differences to Win Title

Mike Brown's job security was a real topic of conversation earlier last season. Back in January, reports of locker-room infighting followed an embarrassing home loss, with fan and media reaction growing loud enough that some outlets were openly floating the idea of firing him.

That noise resurfaced again in April. ESPN's Danny Green pointed to "rumblings" of player dissatisfaction with Brown and how he was using Jalen Brunson. Months later, with a championship banner now hanging in Madison Square Garden, Brunson's father and Knicks assistant coach Rick Brunson revealed how Brown quietly defused all of that tension before it ever boiled over.

Speaking on the "Hardwood Knocks" podcast, Rick Brunson described the dynamic heading into the playoffs. "All summer I hear how great Jalen is, KAT, OG," he said. "I never hear Mike Brown." That perception, he explained, was something Brown addressed rather than letting simmer. "Right before playoffs, he met with each starter — 'Get everything off your chest.'"

From there, Brown took an approach co-host John Wallace called "old school." Rick Brunson laid out what happened next: "Then he brought them all in and said, 'You said this about him, you said this about him. So what's up? And they talked to each other, they pieced it out... obviously it was all basketball, like, 'I can do this,' or 'you do this too much,' or 'you don't do this enough.' And they actually talked to each other and understood each other."

According to Rick Brunson, that meeting marked a genuine turning point. "I swear that was the moment where we took off," he said, pointing to the final stretch of the regular season carrying directly into the playoffs.

Even after falling behind 2-1 in the first round against the Hawks, the belief inside the locker room never wavered. "We still felt like we were the better team," Brunson said, "obviously you have to go out there and prove it."

What followed was a 13-game winning streak that carried New York through the rest of the postseason and into its first championship since 1973, capped by a Game 5 win over the Spurs in the Finals. Rick Brunson made clear he sees that stretch as directly tied to what happened in those pre-playoff meetings. "When we went on that 13-game winning streak, I would say Mike don't get enough credit," he said. "Mike was tremendous."

Jalen Brunson himself later called Brown someone who "understands what it is to be a champion." But it was his father's account that filled in exactly how that understanding translated into the room during the moment it mattered most, turning a fractured locker room into a title team almost overnight.
