The NBA just got through a trade saga involving a major superstar, as Giannis Antetokounmpo's move to the Miami Heat finally became a reality. Now, the league finds itself in the middle of another. Ironically, this latest saga was born out of the previous one and centers around Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown.
The Celtics tried to trade Brown to the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis. But ultimately, the Greek Freak and the Bucks worked out a move to South Beach instead. Reports now state that the Celtics are trying to find a different landing spot for their star wing, who averaged 29.0 points per game during the 2025-26 season.
While Brown is a talented player and nearly every team would love to have someone of his caliber, actually acquiring him is another story. Just how difficult would it be? NBA insider Bobby Marks broke it down on SportsCenter.
"There's trade suitors out there, and he's owed $183 million dollars over the next three years," Marks said. "He had signed that supermax contract a few years ago.
I think there are a couple of things that are complicated with a trade." Marks continued. "Just based on where this collective bargaining agreement is, roster construction."
Marks reminded the NBA community that having the right type of players around Brown is important. That very fact is making teams hesitate to proceed with a deal.
This past season, Brown enjoyed a career-best scoring campaign while also averaging 5.1 assists per game, leading the Celtics comfortably into the playoffs despite Jayson Tatum missing most of the season with an Achilles tear. At various points during the campaign, Brown even found himself in the MVP conversation.
He has proven he can be a No. 1 option. But even players of his caliber need to be surrounded by elite talent and, in most cases, another star. Without that, winning a championship becomes extremely difficult.
That's what makes trading for Brown so complicated. For the Celtics to even consider a deal, a team would likely have to gut its roster. Once that happens, building a championship-caliber team around him becomes an extremely tall task.
However, according to Bobby Marks, not every team around the league views Jaylen Brown as being worth that price.
Bobby Marks Made a Bold Statement Regarding Jaylen Brown
If it weren't for Tatum, Brown would be the No. 1 option on the Boston Celtics. He proved that last season by leading the team to a 56-26 record during a year many believed was already lost.
Despite coming off the best season of his career, though, Brown has still found himself at the center of trade rumors. And now, part of that discussion revolves around how other teams value him.
In a surprising revelation, ESPN's Bobby Marks said that analytically minded people around the league do not view Brown as highly as many fans might expect.
Marks stated said that the Celtics had a negative net rating with Brown on the court, which is causing some teams to hold back from pursuing a trade. In fact, one analytics person told Marks that Brown is viewed as the "seventh-best player on a team."
Marks, on the other hand, raved about Brown's talent and said that if it were up to him, he'd want the 2024 Finals MVP on his team.
Brown has since gone on a tirade on 'X' following Marks' revelation. He said that analytics has ruined basketball, and then stated that no one else in the league has more combined regular-season and playoff wins over the last decade.
So far in his career, Brown has made five All-Star teams and has made the All-NBA second team twice.
Combine that with the fact that he's coming off his best season yet, and it's safe to say that Brown already has a resume that proves the doubters wrong.
