“I Don’t Wanna Go”: Steve Kerr Reveals Key Conversation With Stephen Curry Before Warriors Extension

Stephen Curry's loyalty to Golden State has never really been in question. He said back in 2024, telling ESPN's Anthony Slater directly that he didn't want to play for a different coach than Steve Kerr. Now, with Curry having just signed a two-year extension to stay with the Warriors through 2028-29, Kerr revealed just how firm that stance actually was when the two sat down to discuss it.

Kerr described the conversation that set the extension in motion. "When we talked at the end of last year, I asked him if that was a consideration," Kerr said on NBC Sports Dubs Talk. "And first thing he said was, 'I'm not moving my family. My family is so important to me. They're happy here.' And he said, 'I don't want to go anywhere.'"

For Kerr, the response wasn't just about the contract logistics. It reflected something deeper about who Curry is both at home and inside the organization. "That's a reflection of who he is as a father, as a human being," Kerr said. "And he meant that for his own personal family and his Warriors family, too. I can feel it, like he doesn't want to go anywhere else."

Kerr went further, comparing Curry's bond with the franchise to some of the league's most iconic one-team legacies. "He understands the power and the value of being the face of the franchise, not only while he's playing, but even beyond. He's going to be Kobe for the Lakers, Tim Duncan for the Spurs. Steph will always be the Warriors, and that's pretty cool."

That conversation set the stage for Curry's new deal. A two-year, $116 million extension that doesn't begin until the 2027-28 season, with Curry reportedly leaving roughly $20 million on the table compared to the max he was eligible for.

The structure also sets up real financial flexibility for Golden State next summer. Jimmy Butler's and Draymond Green's own contracts are coming off the books around the same time, giving the front office room to build further around Stephen Curry if the opportunity arises.

The timing of Curry's extension carried extra weight given Kerr's own solidified status. Kerr had already secured his own future back in May 2026 by signing a new two-year extension that made him the league's highest-paid coach.

He's previously said that he was comfortable letting those conversations play out naturally rather than rushing a new agreement mid-season. "I'm very comfortable going into the season with a year left."

Taken together, Kerr's account of that conversation does more than explain why Stephen Curry signed his extension. It reinforces the idea that Golden State's stability going forward isn't just about salary-cap timing or roster building.

It's built on a mutual commitment between a franchise cornerstone and the coach who helped build his legacy, one that both sides, by Kerr's own account, have no real interest in walking away from anytime soon.
