Heat Emerges as Biggest Frontrunner for Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade — How Could Miami Pull It Off?

For the first time in years, a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade no longer feels impossible. After another disappointing playoff exit and growing uncertainty surrounding Milwaukee’s long-term direction, the Bucks are reportedly open to discussing deals involving their franchise superstar.

Giannis signed a three-year extension with Milwaukee because he believed the organization could still compete for championships. But after a frustrating 2025-26 season, both sides now appear to be confronting a difficult reality: the Bucks may no longer have a roster capable of maximizing the final years of his prime.

NBA insider Shams Charania reported earlier this month that Milwaukee has started listening to trade inquiries involving Antetokounmpo. ESPN later added that the relationship between Giannis and the organization has become increasingly strained following multiple disappointing postseason runs and the team’s uncertain future around an aging core.

Amid the growing speculation, the Miami Heat have emerged as one of the strongest potential landing spots. Recent betting odds and league chatter have increasingly connected Pat Riley’s organization to Antetokounmpo, with Miami reportedly viewed as a legitimate frontrunner if Milwaukee officially opens the bidding war.

While the New York Knicks continue to hover around the conversation because of Giannis’ interest in playing for a major-market contender, Miami offers something equally attractive: established culture, championship expectations, warm weather, and a front office known for aggressively chasing superstars.

The challenge, however, is obvious. Miami does not possess the overwhelming draft capital that teams like Oklahoma City or San Antonio can offer, meaning the Heat would likely need to sacrifice major roster pieces just to get Milwaukee to seriously engage in negotiations.

Heat Will Have to Sacrifice Major Pieces For Giannis Antetokounmpo

Looking at Giannis Antetokounmpo's contract, he still has $58.4 million remaining for the upcoming 2026-27 season. It's worth mentioning that he also has a player option worth $62.7 million for the 2027-28 season.

However, the Miami Heat only needs to worry about his contract for the upcoming season. Having that said, which players on their roster could possibly match Giannis' contract while enticing the Bucks to trigger a trade deal?

The first option would be to trade both Tyler Herro and Andrew Wiggins. Herro will enter the final year of his contract in the 2026-27 season. His last paycheck sums up to $33 million. Meanwhile, if Wiggins decides to pick up his player option, he has $30.1 million remaining in his contract.

The Heat could trade Herro and Wiggins for Antetokounmpo and the Bucks' 2031 and 2033 first-round picks. Although given how Milwaukee is rebuilding, it might be difficult to convince the organization to let go of the draft picks.

Another option would be to pair either Herro or Wiggins with key role players like Nikola Jovic, Jaime Jaquez Jr., or Kel'el Ware.

Worst-case scenario, the Bucks ask for Bam Adebayo. However, this trade wouldn't make sense for the Heat. Adebayo has proven to be the team's cornerstone since the departure of Jimmy Butler. Bam also re-signed with the Heat, agreeing to a three-year contract $160.3 million.

Having all that said, the likely scenario to take place would be letting go of either Herro or Wiggins, while pairing them with either draft picks or key role players.
