Bam Adebayo Grins After Pat Riley's Tyler Herro Reference
Pat Riley was introducing Giannis Antetokounmpo as the newest face of the Miami Heat when an unexpected joke briefly stole the spotlight. After accidentally leaving Bam Adebayo out while recalling the franchise's biggest stars, Riley paused, looked toward the Heat captain sitting in the front row, and delivered a one-liner that immediately brought the room to laughter.
The moment was Riley's first public reference to Adebayo's highly publicized altercation with former teammate Tyler Herro in Las Vegas a week earlier. Adebayo had returned from Summer League to attend Antetokounmpo's introductory press conference, making Riley's off-the-cuff remark land even better inside Kaseya Center.
"I know that I was remiss in mentioning one guy, and I don't want to get knocked out. You know, Bam was one of those guys who came in here, too… So, you got me? I'm good, right? Okay," Riley said as the audience erupted in laughter before acknowledging Adebayo's role in helping convince the organization to pursue Antetokounmpo.
Adebayo smiled, laughed and nodded back toward Riley from his seat in the front row as the Heat president sought his approval, with additional camera angles showing the exchange remained lighthearted. Erik Spoelstra also smiled while Antetokounmpo appeared briefly confused before joining in as the room applauded.
The joke referenced an altercation that took place on July 10 inside a practice gym at Resorts World in Las Vegas, where Adebayo and Herro were involved in a physical confrontation after a verbal exchange. According to the reported timeline, the NBA and NBPA closed the matter on July 16 without issuing suspensions or fines.
Shams Charania later reported both players were ready to move forward from the incident:
"There is belief to be surveillance footage to be reviewed, but at this point no investigation from the NBA. Tyler Herro not pursuing any legal action as of right now, of course. Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo have clearly had some sort of falling out that potentially began last season … My understanding is both Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo want to move on from this situation."
Neither Adebayo nor Herro has publicly commented further on the altercation since the league closed the matter, while Adebayo also avoided discussing it during appearances surrounding Antetokounmpo's arrival, instead saying, "Biggest thing is we want to win. You can always be aligned with somebody who is about the right stuff and wanting to win."
Giannis Antetokounmpo explains why teaming up with Bam Adebayo excites him
Riley's joke came during a press conference centered on Antetokounmpo, whose arrival officially ushered in a new era for Miami. The two-time MVP spent part of his introductory appearance discussing what it will be like sharing the floor with Adebayo after years of battling him as an opponent.
One of the things that he's looking forward to in his new team is playing with Bam Adebayo. Throughout nine seasons, Antetokounmpo and Adebayo had always been on opposite ends of the court. Giannis opened up during a press conference on Thursday about how his dynamic was with Bam as an opponent.
"Obviously, I've played against him a lot throughout the years," Antetokounmpo said. "Usually, I get eight hours of sleep before I play anybody. With Bam, I got 12 hours of sleep. I had to be extra ready because I know he'll go. He'll play very hard. He's very competitive. He'll do whatever he can to win the game."
Giannis has a clear respect and admiration for Bam's attitude on the hardwood and is looking forward to working with someone like him.
"I'm excited that I have the opportunity to work with him," Antetokounmpo added. "He's funny. He's an easy guy to be around. ... When the two heads of the snakes are very competitive, they work hard, they're very disciplined, I think everybody else is going to follow our lead."
It's been six years since the Heat last made a trip to the NBA Finals. With Antetokounmpo now paired up with Adebayo, many believe that Miami has a real shot at the title again next season. However, that all remains to be seen. With several big trades happening after Antetokounmpo's move to South Beach, everybody's looking forward to seeing how the newly formed Heat duo can handle the competition.
