The Minnesota Timberwolves are set to face off against the Miami Heat on Wednesday for their 2026-27 NBA season opener. Everyone is excited to see both the Wolves and Heat reveal what their new roster will look like in the regular season. And just a day prior to opening night, the Timberwolves finalized a key extension.

According to NBA insider Michael Scotto of Hoopshype, the Wolves offered Jaden McDaniels a one-year, $40 million extension.

"The Minnesota Timberwolves and Jaden McDaniels have agreed to a one-year, $40 million extension," Scotto wrote on X.

What makes this extension interesting is that it is set for the 2029-30 NBA season. McDaniels still has three fully guaranteed salaries remaining in his current contract. Scotto reported that Jaden is the first player in NBA history to sign a contract extension while having three guaranteed years remaining on a non-max contract.

Scotto also mentioned that McDaniels is now positioned to negotiate another hefty extension come 2028, securing another contract despite having guaranteed seasons remaining.

"Under the NBA’s CBA rules, the new deal positions McDaniels to negotiate another lucrative extension as early as 2028. The extension covers the 2029-30 season," Scotto added in the post.

After six years of playing for the Wolves, it isn't surprising that the front office wants to secure McDaniels on the roster. Jaden is one of their strongest defenders, complementing Rudy Gobert's supreme defense. With Anthony Edwards carrying most of the offensive load, McDaniels covers what the Ant Man can't provide on the floor.

Anthony Edwards Puts NBA on Notice With Amusing Message

One of the most anticipated teams to watch this season is the Minnesota Timberwolves. This is due to the arrival of LaMelo Ball on the roster. Anthony Edwards finally has a star-caliber point guard who can also help share the load en route to a postseason berth.

While the Timberwolves racked up an even 3-3 record in the 2026 NBA Preseason, the team showed plenty of potential heading into the regular season. One thing we've learned about the new Wolves is that Ant Man is no longer the only offensive threat opponents need to deal with. LaMelo could easily take over when he wants and has to.

Now that he knows that his Timberwolves look to be a much stronger team this season, Edwards put the entire league on notice. Ant issued a warning, claiming that his team is about to take over the league this season.

"When y'all see the Timberwolves come in town, y'all n***** need to know they on bull****," Edwards said. "We're gonna foul the s*** out of you... Yeah, we own that... Get your season tickets. This s*** gonna be turnt up this year. Like, if you miss a game, you gonna miss out."

While Edwards said it in a humorous manner, the sentiment rings true. The Timberwolves will be a solid contender to watch in the Western Conference.
